Based on African American trickster tales, this humorous book by Janet Stevens received a Caldecott Honor in 1996. Bear is wealthy, but lazy, with lots of land and Hare is poor and energetic with a good brain. When Hare suggests that they combine their skills, Bear agrees, but falls victim to Rabbit’s suggestion that they each choose only whatever grows above the ground or underneath. With an unusual (and fitting!) top to bottom format, this is surprisingly scarce in first edition. In Fine condition in a Fine dust jacket.
