Late in his career (after creating such classic children’s books as Miss Nelson is Missing), James Marshall tried his hand at fairy tales and turned them into humorous, wonderfully told and illustrated stories. Goldilocks and the Three Bears reveals the classic heroine for what she was (“To tell the truth Goldilocks was one of those naughty little girls who do exactly as they please”) and stuffs the bears’ home with all manner of knick-knacks. This Fine first edition in a Fine dust jacket received a Caldecott Honor in 1989.
