Blue Ribbon Press not only trademarked the term “pop-up,” but was among the first to offer pop-up and movable books featuring characters from popular culture: Mickey Mouse, Popeye, Little Orphan Annie, and more. Their books were available in a variety of formats, but among the scarcest are the small (4 x 5”) Midget Pop-Up Books with only one (always terrific) full-color pop-up in the centerfold. The “Pop-Up” Buck Rogers (NY: Blue Ribbon, 1934) features unattributed black and white illustration on every other page and a pop-up in the center by Lt. Dick Calkins and Phil Nowlan.
