19th century movable books are a delight in and of themselves, made even more so by the irony of their survival. How did such delicate and appealing items manage to outlast the hands of children? A Make-Belief of Funny Beasts is a late (undated, but 1890’s) example. It features four full-color movable plates, each activated by a small tab at the bottom of the page: an elephant rides a bicycle, a doctor cares for a sick pig, and so on. Additional line drawings and text add to the fun. In remarkably Fine condition, inside and out.
