VERY early Sendak and one of his most elusive titles. Tommy is not a little boy, he tells his mother. Today, he is a giant and goes out to do the things giants do: smash houses, touch the clouds, help airplanes and trains, put people in their pockets, and sit on tall buildings. As night encroaches, he gets smaller and smaller until his mother can lift him into bed. A perfect imaginative tale by Beatrice Schenk de Regniers that any child can understand while Sendak's artwork is an example of a giant talent of another kind altogether. A scarce first edition in VG+ condition (with one small school stamp) in a slightly darkened dust jacket with an archival closed tear.
