"There was a time in the world before anyone knew anyone else." Thus begins The First Story by Margaret Wise Brown. Her longer, poetic text captures the wonder of a small girl, alone in the world and talking with the animals in a deep, dark wood. The squirrel believes that she's another squirrel, the bird that she's a bird, the cat that she's a cat, but she insists that she's a girl and avoids all dangers until she finds solace with a little boy. Black and white (with a bit of yellow) pictures by Marc Simont fully capture the magic of an uncharted land. A first edition (based on dust jacket price [$1.75] and listed titles) in About Fine condition in a VG+ dj.
