It's the mark of a great illustrator or author to create something artistic out of the commonplace. Mr. Gumpy's Outing by John Burningham is a neat example. Mr. Gumpy lives by the river and his outing in a small boat is interrupted by all sorts of passenger requests: children want to come along and so do a rabbit, a cat, a dog, a goat, and so on. Filled to capacity, the boat overturns, but without disastrous results. A simple, happy book with colorful illustrations for which he was awarded England's Kate Greenaway Medal (like our Caldecott). A first US edition in Fine condition in a Fine dust jacket.
