Author/illustrator Dorothy Kunhardt was a force of nature. Born into a family that tirelessly unearthed and documented photographs of Abraham Lincoln, she turned to children’s literature as her own family grew and wrote, illustrated, and often hand-lettered, such popular books as Pat the Bunny (Simon & Schuster, 1940), and Lucky Mrs. Ticklefeather (Simon & Schuster, 1951). Issued just two years following Pat the Bunny, The Telephone Book (Simon & Schuster, 1942)…like its predecessor…came in its own box and featured interactive elements. Here, a child can manipulate two telephones, one inside the front and another inside the back cover, feel a real plastic bowl (a first printing point, eliminated in later printings), pull a cover up over a sleeping baby, open an envelope containing a letter to a soldier and mail the same in a postal box. In remarkably complete and About Fine condition in original VG box. Acid discoloration on the page with the soldier’s envelope. A pre-iPhone classic!
