Modern versions of the children's classic, The Story of Doctor Dolittle, have removed several racial slurs and an appalling skin-whitening subplot, but the story of the English doctor who learned to talk to animals and became their worldwide champion continues to hold its place in the history of juvenile literature. Written and illustrated by Hugh Lofting (and the first in a series that eventually ran to a dozen books), this first edition was published in the US in 1920 by Frederick A. Stokes (and was published in Great Britain several years later). In addition to the tissue-guarded color frontispiece, Lofting contributed numerous black-and-white illustrations. In VG+ condition with just gentle exterior wear and a (very) occasional foxing spot on the interior.
