The Robin’s Christmas Eve (London: Frederick Warne, nd [ca. 1880]) is one of Aunt Louisa’s London Toy Books with chromolithograph illustrations by master printer J.M. Kronheim and tells the story of the salvation of a young bird at holiday time. Lost in its first snow, a small robin seeks warmth and shelter, initially at a lordly mansion and finally at a church where it raises its song along with children practicing for a Christmas concert. The color illustrations are wonderful examples of their kind, though utilizing dark colors in keeping with the story’s theme. The poetic text by C.E.B. is thoroughly Victorian. In absolutely Fine condition, this somehow escaped the last 150 years without flaws. A Christmas miracle!
