In Old Japan, a funny woman laughs Tee-he-he-he as she bakes rice dumplings. When one rolls down a hill, she falls into a hole and winds up in the land of monsters, evil Oni, who compel her to make dumplings for them. Her escape with a magic paddle sets her up for life. This faux fable by Arlene Mosel sports full-color illustrations by Blair Lent and was the 1973 Caldecott Medal-winner.
