The original Struwwelpeter (variously translated as Slovenly Peter and Shock-Headed Peter) was created by Heinrich Hoffman in 1845 and the collection of curiously violent moral tales for children quickly became a classic in its field. It prove so popular that “Hoffmaneques,” or take-offs on the original established themselves as a collecting category. One of the scarcest and best of these is The Egyptian Struwwelpeter. Driven by a fascination with ancient Egypt, later-Victorian readers would have been familiar with both the Hoffman originals and the faux-hieroglyphic illustrations and Egyptian allusions that fill the volume. “Cruel Frederick” becomes “The Story of Cruel Psamtek, “ The Story of the Inky Boys” becomes “The Story of the Red Boys,” “The Story of Flying Robert” becomes “The Story of Flying Amenhotep,” and so on. With wonderful full-color illustrations on every page (unattributed), this first edition is in Very Fine condition (please excuse some of the distortion on the posted pictures…my fault, not the book’s).
