L. Frank Baum is rightly noted for his The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (Chicago: Geo. M. Hill, 1900) and its sequels, but was a prolific writer authoring more than three dozen other novels plus numerous short stories, poems, and scripts. Published the same year as his best-known work, The Army Alphabet (Chicago: Geo. M. Hill, 1900) is a large (10-1/2 x 12-1/2”) ABC book with full color illustrations by Harry Kennedy throughout. Baum adds patriotic yet often humorous rhyming text (“B represents the BAYONET, ’Tis useful in a fight; For when ’tis pointed at the foe, He instantly takes flight, Or else is pricked quite full of holes—Which spoils his appetite.”). One of Baum’s scarcest volumes and a must-have for any alphabet book (or abecedary) collector. In VG+ condition with some exterior edge wear, but internally Fine.
