Some 19th century pop-up and movable books are distinguished by their awesome complexity and others by their simplify and beauty. Little Red Riding Hood, part of Raphael Tuck’s Combined Expanding Toy and Painting Book Series, falls into the latter category. Six beautifully chromolithographed illustrations lie flat against simple three-color backgrounds, but gently pushing the chromo plate to the right lifts it up and creates a notable 3-dimensional effect. This is a scarce and desirable series, not often found in great condition (the chromo plates were often detached and probably used for scrapbooking), but this complete example, circa 1890, is in About Fine condition with a touch of internal foxing and measures just 5-1/2 x 7.”
