In all the 100-plus years that the American Library Association has awarded the Newbery Medal for the best-written children’s book, it had never gone to a graphic novel…until now. In 2020, the coveted award went to to Jerry Craft, for his New Kid, a sensitive exploration of a gifted African American middle schooler placed in a predominantly white school. Both hardcover and softcover first editions were issued simultaneously. This first edition copy, in wraps, is in generally Fine condition with a light pink stripe along the top edge (NOT a remainder mark…my granddaughter was looking at it while eating strawberry jam!).
