There are times that a book is so unusual that it’s hard to compare it to what came before or followed. La Plus Vieille Histoire du Monde (Paris: Jardin des Modes, 1930), by Francoise (Seignobosc) was originally created by batik, an Indonesian wax-resistant dye process. The result is an utterly charming Garden of Eden story printed entirely on cloth with crimped edges. Strikingly bold colors bring the author/illustrator’s fanciful animals and other figures to life, often in dramatic double-page spreads. In Very Fine condition (a rarity for this title) with no fading or soiling, this is a work of art as well as a wonderfully bizarre example of a unique children’s book. In French.
