Germany was the center of beautiful chromolithography during the final decades of the 19th century and Kleinkinderfreund (Young Child’s Friend) is a remarkable testimonial to that fact. In thirteen pages, most of them two-page spreads, on heavy boards, typical objects and scenes from the day are illustrated in remarkable color. Among the displays: the four seasons, musical instruments, household scenes, modes of transportation, fruits and vegetables, and more. Each individual object is identified in both German and French. The book itself is in Very Fine condition…but what makes it all the more remarkable is the inclusion of the original dust jacket (a real rarity for a 19th century children’s book), a bit rough around the edges and missing a bit here and there, but almost complete.
