The Coney Island amusement park has been an American staple since the late 1800’s and it’s full appeal is captured in this 1882 McLoughlin publication, Johnny Headstrong’s Trip to Coney Island, with remarkable full color chromolithographs plus sepia illustrations by W. Bruton. When a prosperous father agrees to take rambunctious Johnny and sister Sue to Coney Island, he never imagines the trouble the young boy will experience: falling off a ship, getting lost on the beach, ruining a game on the sands, and being thrown from one of the rides. Johnny’s character is not dissimilar to another 19th century children’s standard, Der Struwwelpeter, in which incautious kids are taught hard lessons, but all ends pretty well in the rhyming text, with Johnny scraped and bruised but looking forward to another journey. In VG+ condition with some minor exterior wear.
