The dominant culture continues, in both subtle and overt ways, to maintain its place in the racial hierarchy, but one has to admit that a book like Fun From the Flowery Land (NY: McLoughlin Brothers, nd [ca. 1885]), three tales that contain vicious Chinese stereotypes, would have a hard time being published today. Absolutely stunning, full-page chromolithographs (this is McLoughlin, after all), illustrate each of the three stories: “So-Sli and Ho-Fi, or the Wicked Husband,” “Fun and Hey-Ho, the Lovers of Peking,” and “Ah-Fum and Ah-Fee, or the Rival Scholars.” 18 chromos in all! Cloth backed color pictorial boards with some external wear (particularly at the corners), a bit of water staining at the outside edge (not affecting the illustrations) but otherwise internally Fine, tight and complete.
