The scarcest and most novel (at least, to me) of London’s Dean and Sons pop-ups (here offered in a Swedish version) are a series of four “Surprise Model” books, all issued in 1892. When activated by almost invisible strings that are held in place by the reader’s thumbs (placed on full-color printed thumbprints on each page) the three movable pop-ups (2 singe-page and one double-page) come to astonishing three-dimensional life. While En Utflykt till Landet (An Excursion to the Country) sounds like an idyllic sojourn into rural life, this is really an upper class trip with the text and models depicting a wealthy family’s excursion to a country cottage (more like a small estate) and being served sumptuous meals (albeit al fresco) by a slew of servants. In VG+ condition with a few small instances of earlier tape repairs. All three pop-up pages complete and working.
