Ruth Krauss shared a poetic sensibility with Margaret Wise Brown that is unique among mid-century authors. Her dreamlike prose resonates perfectly with Maurice Sendak’s lovely illustrations to capture the love between a young girl and her horse in Charlotte and the White Horse. This is very early Sendak (his career really took off in the early ‘50’s); he and Krauss had published before (A Hole is to Dig, A Very Special House, I’ll be You and You Be Me), but this was their first work in color and remains a much beloved book. In Fine condition in an About Fine dj (with a band of darkening at the front outer edge). Made even more special by a Sendak inscription and signature.
