Part of the McLoughlin Bros. Pantomime Books (which also included Aladdin, Sleeping Beauty, Puss in Boots, and Cinderella), Blue Beard is a magnificent re-telling of the classic Charles Perrault fairytale, first published in 1697. The notorious Blue Beard attracts a series of wives through his wealth, telling each to avoid a certain room. When his final wife seeks access, she discovers a gruesome visage. What makes this edition (circa 1880) particularly notable are the full, half and quarter-page vertical lithographs that create 14 colorful transformation scenes. McLoughlin was the premier American chromolithograph publisher of the 19th century and the plates are absolutely breathtaking. In VG+ condition.
