Described by Peter Haining in his Movable Books as "the piece de resistance of any collection of movables," The Speaking Picture Book was published and re-published many times in the decades before and after the turn of the century, yet only very few remain in workable condition today. And with good reason...this amazing book must have proven nearly irrresistable to small hands and the delicate ivory knobbed pull cords that activate remarkably life-like animal sounds are easily broken (not to mention the rubberized paper bellows that produce the sounds!). With carved and gilded wooden sides. This example is in VG+ condition with a darkened cover and minor external wear. The internal pages are in about Fine condition and feature beautiful chromolithographs of a cock, donkey, lamb, birds, cow, cuckoo, goat, and two children, each with appropriate sounds.
