It's difficult to draw "funny," but James Marshall certainly had the knack. His beloved George and Martha and Viola Swamp series are proof enough, but his penchant for humorous illustration continued throughout his life. Old Mother Hubbard was one of his final books (Marshall died in 1992), a period in which he illustrated a number of nursery rhyme and fairy tale titles including Little Red Riding Hood and Cinderella. Each picture is jam packed with funny asides and in-jokes; when the dog is reading the paper, for example, all the news stories are about found bones. In Fine condition in a Fine dust jacket.
