Adapted from Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, Barbara Cooney's Chanticleer and the Fox won the Caldecott Medal in 1959. Utilizing a scratchboard technique, Cooney illustrates the tale in five- and two-color spreads, reflecting authentic medieval dress and character in her subjects. Drawing her research from manuscripts in the NY Public Library, the Cloisters, and the Pierpont Morgan Library, Cooney beautifully presents Chaucer's tale on the dangers of flattery. In Fine condition in a VG+ dust jacket. Later editions clearly state subsequent printings, but a true first edition must have the dust jacket and the original price of $3.00, present here.
