One of the glories of some 19th century children's books are their chromolithographs, oil-based color illustrations that cannot be equalled by modern methods. Ballad of the Lost Hare (1882) features an incredible collection of 8 full-page chromos by Ida B. Roberts illustrating Margaret Sidney's poem about a rabbit's adventures with various animals: a cow, a goat, a horse, a bull, some lambs, and...finally...a pack of dogs. Remarkably, each plate is still protected by an original loose acetate sheet. A few text pages with repaired tears, an errant small hole or two, but the chromos in remarkable condition. A real rarity in VG condition.
