While a work of historical fiction, Minty is based on facts surrounding Harriet Tubman’s earliest years. She was nicknamed “Minty” and proved to be a “difficult” slave on the Brodas Plantation in the 1820’s, forced to work the fields rather than in the house. Schroeder and Pinkney researched other facts…the clothing, food and living conditions of enslaved peoples in Maryland at that time…to present an honest re-creation of the childhood of one of America’s heroes. A first edition in Fine condition in dj, signed by Pinkney on the title page. Minty received the 1997 Coretta Scott King Illustrator Award.
