Mei Li, a young Chinese girl, is adamant about attending a traditionally “boys only” New Year’s Fair. With her brother, she sneaks into the event and spends a full day taking part in its wonders: acrobats, food, animals, fireworks, and a fortune teller. As night comes on, she and her brother rush home in time to keep her secret journey unrevealed. Author/illustrator Thomas Handforth’s black and white pictures have a lithographic quality and were based on his own experiences in a small Chinese village by way of a Guggenheim Fellowship. The VG+ dust jacket’s spine is somewhat sunned and the extremities have a number of very small chips, but the book is in About Fine condition. A first edition, first printing of an early Caldecott Medal-winner.
