This early Newbery Medal-winner explores the story of a young boy in Calcutta who raises and trains Gay-Neck, an intelligent carrier pigeon. Honed on dangerous flights through the Himalayas, the pigeon serves in a heroic role for the Indian Army fighting in Europe in WWI. After the war, both the young boy and bird retire to a Buddhist monastery to seek peace and healing. The spine of the dj is a bit sunned, but both the dj and book itself are in Near Fine condition. A first edition, first printing of a hard to find Newbery-winner with striking black and white illustrations by Artzybasheff .
