Will (William Lipkind) and Nicolas (Nikolas Mordvinoff) were a forward-thinking team (Will wrote the text and Nicolas the illustrations) of children’s book creators in the 1950’s. Finders Keepers won the Caldecott Medal in 1952 and is an excellent example of their work. Two dogs discover a bone and fight over who found it first. After conferring with a number of individuals and pleading their cases, the bone is stolen by a bigger dog and only the cooperation of the two dogs can retrieve it. With a constricted color palette (red, black, and yellow) Nicolas manages to convey both humor and activity and Will’s text is perfectly suited to the pictures.
